I’ve never been very interested in doing what everyone else is doing.
I've spent nearly 30 years building businesses — from a janitorial company and a brief stint as a basketball agent to a personal training brand and a women-only fitness studio.
Different industries. Different ideas. Some worked. Some didn't.
But I've always had the same instinct: look at what everyone else is doing, question why they're doing it that way, and look for what they might be missing.
That instinct is what I speak about — how I've spotted openings other people walked past, and what it actually takes to turn one into something real.
The opportunity usually isn't where everyone else is looking.
I started my first business out of desperation.
I'd been laid off and decided to start a housecleaning business. But I noticed that the other cleaning companies all seemed to be chasing the same customers in the same neighborhoods.
I lived in a large, upscale gated apartment community. And I remember thinking:
Why go where everybody else is going?
The people living around me were busy professionals. They had money. They probably didn't have the time, or the desire, to clean their own apartments. And because I lived there, I could reach customers other cleaners couldn't.
So I went for it. I bought supplies, printed business cards, put them around the complex, and I was in business.
That was the beginning.
I didn't know it then, but I would spend the next three decades asking some version of that same question.
